The Africana Institute is ECC\u2019s center for the exploration and critical examination of the African global experience.\u00a0 We invite all students to join in the development and participation of a wide variety of academic, cultural and social programs, which will range from the diverse experiences of people of African descent from Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean Islands and beyond.<\/p>

The Institute provides research opportunities and resources for students and the community.\u00a0 World renowned African and African diaspora scholars, performers, activists and others will visit ECC for lectures, workshops, exhibits, and performances.\u00a0 Be sure to participate in these wonderful and exciting opportunities.<\/p>

Dr. Akil Kokayi Khalfani<\/strong>\u00a0is Director of the Africana Institute and Associate Professor of Sociology at Essex County College. He is President and Founder of ATIRA Corp, a Think Tank that develops solutions for the problems that people of African descent face globally. He is a motivational speaker and author who excites audiences all around. He serves on the Executive Council for the\u00a0Pan-Afrakan Kash Kmt Mdw Ntchr Outreach Society.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>

Dr. Khalfani is the author of the bestselling,\u00a0The Hidden Debate: The Truth Revealed about the Battle over Affirmative Action in South Africa and the United States<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(Routledge 2006), which was nominated for two national awards: the Oliver Cromwell Cox Award and the American Sociological Association\u2019s Distinguished Book Award. He is the co-author of a new book\u00a0Introduction to Sociology: Understanding Our Social World<\/strong><\/em>. He has written articles and book chapters on Pan Africanism, racial classification in South Africa, and population statistics. He has recently embarked on a three book series called\u00a0\u201cAfricana Sociology\u201d<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>

Dr. Khalfani has a Ph.D. and a Masters degree in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania, from which he also earned a Certificate in African Studies. Additionally, in South Africa he studied Zulu, Afrikaans and southern African history and culture at the University of Pretoria.<\/p>

His areas of expertise are Africana Studies, race relations, social stratification, and comparative history.<\/p>
