{"id":805,"date":"2022-04-20T11:17:32","date_gmt":"2022-04-20T11:17:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.essex.edu\/?page_id=805"},"modified":"2025-06-12T15:38:28","modified_gmt":"2025-06-12T19:38:28","slug":"refunding-credit-balances","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.essex.edu\/refunding-credit-balances\/","title":{"rendered":"Refunding Credit Balances"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>You may be entitled to a credit balance refund when payments to your student account, including financial aid awards and loan disbursements, exceed your Essex County College tuition, fee, and other charges.&nbsp;&nbsp; The Bursar&#8217;s Office will produce a student refund for you in the amount of your credit balance.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Definition of Credit Balance:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A credit balance occurs when the total of the credits or payments posted to a student\u2019s tuition account (e.g., cash, check, charge payments, loan disbursements, scholarships, financial aid grants, etc.) exceeds the student\u2019s charges applied to the account for a specific semester or term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Credits balances available for refunds are negative (-) balances created on the student\u2019s tuition account after-credits or payments have been posted and all applicable and or allowable charges have been deducted. Credit balances can also be created when a paid student drops or withdraws from a class.&nbsp; Please review the tuition refund policy at <b>Tuition Refund Policy&nbsp;<\/b>(Tab found on this webpage)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Title IV credits are negative (-) balances created on a student\u2019s tuition account after the PELL grant has been applied and all allowable charges have been paid.&nbsp; Title IV allowable charges are current tuition charges, mandatory fees, book charges, and prior year charges with the student\u2019s written authorization not to exceed $200.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Time Frame for Paying Credit Balances:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Title IV or PELL grant credit<\/strong>&nbsp;balances will be automatically issued no later than 14 days from the date the credit balance occurs on a student\u2019s tuition account.&nbsp; Students will be notified via email when their refund is processed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For all other credit balance refunds, the refund accountant will run a credit balance report immediately after the add\/drop period to process credit balances. Please allow 30 days for processing.<br><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Method of Refunding Credit Balances:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cash and check overpayments will be refunded via check and credit card overpayments will be refunded to the credit or debit card account originally charged.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Financial aid students are encouraged to enroll in direct deposit to have their refund sent via electronic fund transfer (EFT) to a designated bank account.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><br>Direct Deposit Enrollment:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you enroll in direct deposit, you enjoy the following conveniences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Funds are available the next day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Funds can be credited to a savings or checking account<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid standing in check-cashing lines or incurring check-cashing fees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No chance of your check being lost, stolen or returned<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Enrollment forms are available&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/essexedu2483.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FinAid-DirectDeposit-AuthorizationForm-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>&nbsp;and should be completed and delivered to the Bursars Office in room #4121 on the Newark Campus or on the first level at the West Essex Campus.
